Au cours des dernières décennies, les chercheurs ont constaté une augmentation du nombre de personnes présentant une déficience intellectuelle qui sont devenues parents (McConnel, 2008; Pixa-Kettner, 2008). Peu d’études se sont intéressées à la sensibilité des mères présentant une déficience intellectuelle. Or la sensibilité maternelle est reconnue comme un facteur qui joue un rôle important pour la qualité de l’attachement mère-enfant (de Wolf & van Ijzendoorn, 1997) et le développement global de l’enfant (Aunos, Goupil, & Feldman, 2004). Une recension des écrits scientifiques a été réalisée sur la parentalité et la sensibilité des personnes présentant une déficience intellectuelle. Cet article a pour buts : 1) de mieux cerner le phénomène de la parentalité chez les personnes présentant une déficience intellectuelle; 2) de décrire les différents facteurs qui influencent la qualité de la relation parentale et particulièrement le rôle joué par la sensibilité maternelle pour cette population spécifique. La discussion porte sur les moyens à mettre en place en vue de soutenir les parents présentant une déficience intellectuelle et d’offrir à leurs enfants des conditions de développement optimales.
