La comparaison des societes est une activite ordinaire, dont la pratique s’observe bien au-dela de ses usages savants. A partir de l’etude ethnographique d’une mobilisation pour le droit a l’education des enfants sans-papiers au Quebec, cet article se penche sur des usages militants de la comparaison. Il montre en particulier le role crucial que celle-ci a joue dans la construction du probleme public de la scolarisation des enfants sans-papiers au Quebec. Qu’il s’agisse de sensibiliser des publics, de definir les problemes, de les donner a voir, d’echafauder des plans d’action ou de monter des argumentaires convaincants, la reference aux experiences etrangeres (francaises, americaines et ontariennes notamment) est centrale. Ses usages se heurtent cependant a des enjeux de comparabilite qui ne sont pas sans faire penser a ceux rencontres par les chercheurs en sciences sociales. Le « comparatisme militant » se trouve ainsi au cœur de processus de diffusion et de circulation des causes et des problemes publics d’un espace social et national a un autre.
