Abstract
Les toponymes sont de véritables témoins de la présence de groupes humains qui y trouvent l’un des ciments de leur identité et de leur solidarité. Ils constituent des arguments de validation culturelle et de légitimité territoriale. La toponymie française apparue sur le territoire des provinces des Prairies canadiennes au cours des trois derniers siècles témoigne du passage puis de l’enracinement de francophones au coeur du continent nord-américain. Cette toponymie, si abondante autrefois, ne participe plus que difficilement à l’édification de l’habitus de l’endogroupe francophone. Mus par le désir de maintenir vivant et pérenne ce trésor toponymique dans la littératie culturelle francophone, nous avons entrepris des recherches à long terme visant l’exhumation, l’identification, l’enregistrement et la diffusion de cette toponymie française.
