La question des pratiques locales de survie des riverains d’aires protégées en République Démocratique du Congo se situe au cœur de deux logiques difficilement conciliables. D’une part, l’État s’engage à conserver la nature sans toutefois assurer un minimum de développement local. D’autre part, les communautés locales qui vivent dans la pauvreté n’ont d’autres alternatives que d’exploiter les ressources naturelles. Cet article analyse les activités de survie dans la Réserve de biosphère de Yangambi comme réponse à la faillite de gouvernance étatique en matière de lutte contre la pauvreté. Centrées sur la triangulation des sources de données (focus group, archives historiques et entretiens semi-structurés), les investigations ont révélé un vaste champ d’activités, englobant l’agriculture, la pêche, la chasse, l’exploitation minière, forestière et des produits autres que le bois. Plutôt que de consolider les acquis du développement local hérités du Congo belge, l’État postcolonial les a abandonnés du fait de sa faillite. L’implication directe et/ou indirecte des pouvoirs publics dans ces activités rend difficile l’application de la loi.
