Cette étude présente une analyse des représentations du personnage de Jean le Sot dans le contexte francophone, notamment en Louisiane et dans le Centre-Ouest de la France. Ce personnage est très répandu dans le folklore francophone et plusieurs variations du nom se retrouvent en France, aux Antilles, au Canada et en Louisiane. Dans le contexte louisianais, la représentation de Jean le Sot est presque complètement limitée à l’idiot par excellence. Ces contes prennent souvent la forme d’un cycle de petits scénarios enchainés, sans ordre déterminé. On trouve un répertoire similaire dans la tradition orale en France, mais il existe également d’autres types attribués à Jean le Sot où le protagoniste est représenté comme un héros simplet. Cette interprétation positive du personnage se trouve absente du folklore louisianais. À partir des modèles théoriques tels que les motifèmes d’Alan Dundes et le détrônement carnavalesque de Bakhtine, cette étude vise à comprendre les facteurs socioculturels qui auraient pu influencer le plan moral de ces contes oraux.
