Na segunda metade do seculo XIX, o encenador consolida sua presenca na criacao teatral, ainda que sua participacao na composicao da cena nao se reconheca de forma concreta. A ele e creditado o merito de tornar visivel, portanto possivel, o texto dramatico, objeto primeiro do teatro a epoca. Durante muito tempo, a evolucao da tecnica de encenacao se fez entao em decorrencia das transformacoes da dramaturgia. Meyerhold, por exemplo, se ressentia deste imperativo, lembrando o desafio de compor sobre o palco, durante um entreato, o castelo medieval proposto por Maeterlick em A morte de Tintagiles. O avanco da ciencia e da tecnologia nao so socorreu o encenador em resposta as provocacoes dos dramaturgos, mas fomentou a autonomia do encenador em relacao ao texto, atraves de novos dispositivos expressivos.
