Ce mémoire se penche sur la poétique des récits de prison de Joseph-Guillaume Barthe (1818- 1893), Pierre Vallières (1938-1998) et Gérald Godin (1938-1994). Plus précisément, il propose une étude des filiations intellectuelles entre ces récits et une abondante production essayistique fondée sur l’idée d’enfermement. Depuis les années 1830, plusieurs écrivains ont tenté de cerner un sentiment de défaite qui plane sur la société québécoise et qui, en même temps, peut leur faire ombrage. En cela, les récits de prison se positionnent par rapport à cette tradition intellectuelle du grand récit défaitiste qui va de François-Xavier Garneau à Michel Biron, en passant par Pierre Vadeboncœur, Hubert Aquin et Fernand Dumont. La littérature québécoise comporte plusieurs œuvres qui rendent compte de cet abattement à la fois politique, social, intellectuel et psychique, tant et si bien que la fatigue de l’écrivain, comme symptôme inhérent à son statut en société, semble impossible à renverser. En nous appuyant sur l’histoire littéraire, nous montrons que cette fatigue, qui devrait se révéler à plus forte raison dans les récits de prison, tient avant tout à la construction d’un imaginaire littéraire. L’impression de permanence qui accompagne la répétition de ce thème de la fatigue apparaît dans les textes sous la forme d’un jeu sur le temps et l’espace de la prison, sur l’Histoire, sur la fictionnalisation de ce lieu et du prisonnier lui-même, ainsi que sur la littérature qui devient à l’intérieur du récit le miroir de la solitude écrivaine.
