Abstract
M. NourbeSe Philip’s Coups and Calypsos foregrounds a relationship between an Afro-Caribbean woman and an Indo- Caribbean man in a way that shifts the theatrical gaze away from European imperialism and toward a dialogue about coloniality within and across racialized communities. I argue that Philip explores the Trinbagonian home as a site of the connection between larger liberation struggles and romantic tensions. Personal lives are always informed by historical, political, and social structures, yet so-called domestic dramas are often criticized for ignoring national and global themes. I challenge that criticism in order to demonstrate how Philip’s script offers a simultaneously moving and politically relevant story from a unique and under-scrutinized perspective.
