Abstract
Cette étude descriptive nous a permis de mieux comprendre les facteurs psychosociaux les plus fortement associés à la consommation de médicaments psychotropes chez les personnes âgées. Les personnes âgées ( n=160 ) qui ont accepté de participer à l’étude ont été recrutées dans les associations d’aînés. Comparativement aux participants âgés de l’étude qui ne consomment pas de médicaments psychotropes, ceux qui en font usage sont plus âgés et moins scolarisés, ils sont moins satisfaits de leur vie en général et de leur état de santé, ils ont davantage de problèmes de santé et de symptômes dépressifs, ils sont plus limités dans leurs activités et sont moins satisfaits de leur sommeil. Les infirmières doivent être sensibilisées à la consommation de médicaments psychotropes et jouer leur rôle préventif en informant mieux les personnes âgées des dangers de dépendance et des effets pernicieux qu’ils occasionnent à long terme.
