Cet article propose une réflexion critique sur les processus d’internationalisation et de commercialisation de disques étiquetés world music. J’y examine la dialectique des représentations croisées opérée entre producteurs et consommateurs de world music, en faisant un examen historique des différents types de maisons de disques qui emploient cette appellation – au demeurant très controversée depuis son invention par l’industrie du disque en 1987. Ultimement, cet article analyse les liens paradoxaux entre respect d’une « authenticité » et création d’une « hybridité musicale » dans la réalisation de disques commercialisés sous la bannière world music.
