In this second part of a two-part study of the synthesis, microstructure and electrochemical properties of ball milled silicon-tungsten alloys (Si100-xWx, x = 15, 20, 25, 30), the influence of alloy composition and microstructure on the electrochemistry of Si-W alloys is investigated. Unlike other Si-transition metal alloys, which when heating above 600°C can result in crystallization and capacity fade, the prepared Si-W alloys have high thermal stability, with enhanced cycling performance after annealing at 800°C. This makes such alloys compatible with high temperature processing for carbon coating, which can increase cycle life further.
