Demonstration of Concurrent Dual-Band 1-bit Envelope Delta-Sigma Modulated LTE Radio-over-Fiber Transmission

Abstract
With the growing demand for cloud radio access networks, mobile fronthaul networks must stay adaptable, efficient and cost-effective. To simplify fronthaul transmission systems, 1-bit delta-sigma modulation (DSM) radio over fiber (RoF) transmission has been considered promising, in which 1-bit DSM technique is used to simplify remote radio units. Moreover, carrier aggregation is a key technique for increasing fronthaul transmission capacity. This work demonstrates, for the first time, concurrent dual-band 1-bit envelope DSM 64-QAM 20-MHz LTE signals transmitted over RoF system. It is shown that carrier aggregation combined with 1-bit delta-sigma modulation is a possible promising technique for high-capacity fronthaul transmission.
