immagine tratta dal film Uku Ukai, di Audrius Stonys Diciamolo chiaramente: un'intera generazione di fiorentini, la mia, ha nel proprio dna di cultura cinematografica il Festival dei Popoli, con cui non solo condivido la stessa età, ma la stessa voglia di un cinema diverso, di un cinema altro, cosmopolita, figlio del mondo e del tempo contingente.Un cinema che parli la voce dei tanti angoli della Terra, un grande cinema-documentario che oggi marchi anche la differenza rispetto ai tanti equivoci che ci sono intorno a ciò che, appunto, documenta.Uno dei principali meriti del Festival dei Popoli è infatti di proporre all'attenzione del pubblico il film documentario, facendo chiarezza su tutti quei malintesi che fanno sì che nell'opinione comune questo genere venga confuso con il reportage, il servizio televisivo o le riprese d'archivio.Veri e propri film, dunque, quelli in programmazione nel ricco calendario del Festival dei Popoli, che portano alla luce verità poco conosciute, spesso scomode, che società dei Paesi più importanti, fra cui il nostro, sembrano talvolta non voler ascoltare.Attraverso il film documentario il Festival dei Popoli riesce a trasformare il cinema in un forum di scambio e apprendimento sulle culture di tutto il mondo, e sulle sue ansie, così che oltre al valore prettamente cinematografico il festival acquisisce sempre di più una valenza formativa in ambito sociale, culturale, artistico ed economico.Mediateca Regionale Toscana Film Commission, può dire di avere una nuova missione: continuare a sostenere il Festival dei Popoli, sia nelle potenzialità che sta esprimendo nella nostra regione, sia nelle sedi internazionali dove è presente come testimone del modo toscano di pensare il cinema.
