Abstract
De rol van strenge handhaving in het toezicht In 2018 was er opnieuw sprake van turbulentie in de bancaire sector, met als dieptepunt de schikking die ING met het Openbaar Ministerie trof. ING had jarenlang onvoldoende actief geprobeerd te voorkomen dat rekeningen bij de bank werden gebruikt voor witwassen. Hoogleraar Harald Benink kijkt terug op de gebeurtenissen en concludeert in lijn met de in 2010 opgestelde ambities van De Nederlandsche Bank als toezichthouder: de rol van strenge handhaving in het toezicht wordt vaak onderschat.
