Dans cet article, nous présentons un projet inspiré de la recherche-action participative. Sa problématisation, ses choix théoriques, sa méthodologie et ses objectifs de diffusion ont été déterminés en concertation avec un groupe de personnes, membres du collectif de défense de droits en santé mentale de Montréal, Action Autonomie. Les témoignages recueillis à l’étape de recherche du projet qui se poursuit dans la création d'une formation qui sera dispensée par ce même collectif, expriment l’expérience commune du vieillissement dans laquelle peut se reconnaître toute personne arrivée au mitan de sa vie, avec ou sans diagnostic psychiatrique. L’âgisme s’ajoute aux autres discriminations que vivent déjà ces personnes en raison de leur étiquette de «malade mentale». Il s'agit de masquage diagnostique, de perte de crédibilité et d'infantilisation, de surmédication et de diverses formes de mises à l'écart à la ville comme chez soi et paradoxalement dans les services sociaux et de santé.
