Given that the title of the conference was Colonial Cities in Global Perspective, I expected to see some synergy with Bailey's book, but I also assumed there would be little obvious overlap.1 Only a couple of the papers delivered at the conference touched on architecture, and none with the range or depth of Bailey's discussions of ideology, buildings, and labor.
