Abstract
As the third gasotransmitter behind nitric oxide and carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulfide (H2S) opens a brand new chapter in the field of biology and medicine research. Over the years, landmark evidences have proven that H2S plays significant roles not only in mammalian but also in plants. In plants, there are more abundant H2S-generating enzymes than that in animals, and these enzymes are located in different subcellular organisms from in a variety of tissues. With continuous advancement of research methods and accumulation of genetic materials, the effects of H2S on plant growth and development as well as resistance to biotic or abiotic stress have been extensively studied. By interacting with plant hormones, reactive oxygen species, and/or other gasotransmitters, H2S regulates protein activities through S-sulfhydration. This chapter highlights the recent progress regarding the functions of H2S in plant defense under different stress.
