Dans cet article, l’état actuel des pratiques en matière de surveillance des barrages de résidus miniers y est décrit et un résumé des lacunes techniques et opérationnelles cernées grâce à la mobilisation de l’industrie et des intervenants y est présenté. Ces lacunes peuvent être comblées par les technologies disponibles fournies par les fabricants d’instruments commerciaux; toutefois, les coûts et l’absence d’exigences réglementaires peuvent nuire à leur adoption. Une approche intégrée et un ensemble diversifié de technologies s’avèrent donc nécessaires pour régler les problèmes liés à la stabilité des barrages, à la sécurité des travailleurs et du public, ainsi qu’à la protection de l’environnement. Les applications et les limites des capteurs y sont décrites et des exigences de conception sont proposées pour un système de surveillance intégré en temps réel. Le Conseil national de recherches du Canada (CNRC) étudie actuellement l’utilisation de capteurs à fibres optiques distribuées comme solution possible pour permettre une surveillance en temps réel et répartie du rendement des barrages. Les tests de fiabilité de ces capteurs sont en cours. La nécessité pour l’industrie et les organismes de réglementation de participer à la mise au point de systèmes de surveillance intégrés et complets y est également soulignée.
