Abstract
Dans cet article, l’auteur s’intéresse à la place qu’occupe la religion au sein de la culture publique commune québécoise, afin de voir comment on peut envisager la place d’une religiosité encadrée au sein des institutions. En puisant au répertoire des lectures sociologiques, religiologiques et juridiques, il s’agit de voir si l’action publique peut accorder une place à la religion et, si oui, à quelle(s) condition(s). En distinguant deux conceptions possibles relatives à la place de la religion au sein de l’action publique, soit la religion comme fondement normatif et la religion comme outil d’intervention , l’auteur défend l’idée selon laquelle il est possible d’inclure la religion au sein de l’action publique, à la condition que la religion ne soit pas considérée comme étant une norme fondationnelle de l’action publique, mais plutôt un outil d’intervention parmi d’autres visant à servir celle-ci. L’auteur propose ici une lecture nuancée des enjeux de diversité culturelle et religieuse qui s’éloigne de deux positions tranchées au regard du religieux dans l’espace public : la position d’exclusion stricte, qui consiste à tenter d’évacuer la religion de la vie publique, et la position d’inclusion inconditionnelle, qui consiste à accepter sans condition la présence du religieux au sein de l’action publique.
