Abstract
Le sud de l’Ontario recèle des centaines de sites archéologiques hurons-wendat. Au cours des cent cinquante dernières années, l’aménagement du territoire et la collecte illégale d’artéfacts, ainsi que des fouilles archéologiques, en ont perturbé ou détruit des douzaines. Ces deux dernières décennies, les Hurons-Wendat ont rapatrié plus de deux mille ancêtres et pressé le gouvernement de l’Ontario et les municipalités de mieux protéger leur patrimoine ancestral. Face aux revendications des Hurons-Wendat pour minimiser les perturbations des sites ancestraux, les archéologues élaborent de nouvelles approches durables. Le présent article porte sur les défis pratiques, éthiques et politiques des archéologues établis en Ontario qui souhaitent travailler solidairement avec les Hurons-Wendat afin que leurs sites archéologiques, leurs artéfacts et les restes humains de leurs ancêtres soient à l’abri de l’aménagement du territoire, de la collecte d’artéfacts et de fouilles archéologiques inutiles.
