Abstract
Abstract The colorimetric operation of tristimulus integration is analyzed from first principles. An expression compatible with the tenets of linear algebra is found to describe this operation. This expression proves to be different from the operation prescribed by the Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage (CIE) for calculating tristimulus values. This article goes on to examine just what the CIE may be calculating, how their values may relate to tristimulus values, and how it may have occurred that no others have noticed this fact over more than 85 years of use of the CIE method.
