Se trata de un volumen que reune cinco textos sobre grandes viajeros y exploradores espanoles del siglo XIX si no completamente olvidados, si poco conocidos. Juan Vernacci Retamal (Cadiz, 1760-1810), gran marino y explorador que participo en el expedicion Malaspina y surco los siete mares. Estuvo durante anos al mando del galeon de Manila, que iba desde Filipinas a Acapulco. Un estrecho en Canada, un monte en Filipinas y unas islas en Argentina llevan su nombre y recuerdan sus hazanas. Celestino Mutis (Cadiz, 1732-1808), otro gaditano, conocido de vista por aparecer en los antiguos billetes de 2 000 pesetas. Cirujano y sacerdote, se dedico algo a la mineria y mucho a la botanica. Fue acusado de «copernicano» por la Inquisicion, un cargo retrasado mas de un siglo, y la burocracia le hizo esperar hasta cumplir 50 anos para poder dirigir su ansiada expedicion botanica por el Nuevo Mundo. Nos dejo un herbario de 20 000 pliegos y una coleccion de 6 000 dibujos maravillosos que se conserva en el Jardin Botanico de Madrid. Los tres viajeros romanticos, Domingo Badia (Ali Bey) (Barcelona, 1767-1818), Joaquin Gatell (Altafulla, 1826-1879) y Jose Maria Murga (Bilbao, 1827-1876), que tienen algunos puntos en comun: los tres fueron espias, se disfrazaron de arabes, aprendieron la lengua, se camuflaron perfectamente, vivieron peripecias increibles y escribieron libros. Badia llego hasta La Meca, Gatell fue instructor del sultan de Marruecos y Murga, que dejo la casaca de husar para ganarse la vida como taumaturgo sacamuelas y partero, tambien en Marruecos. Manuel Iradier (Vitoria, 1854 -1911), el africanista, inventor y viajero romantico que conocio a Stanley y exploro la region del Golfo de Guinea, en particular Rio Muni, que luego seria la Guinea Espanola. Hizo sus viajes con familia y todo. Emilio Bonelli (Zaragoza, 1854-1926), militar de carrera que fundo Villa Cisneros, y colonizo el solo Rio de Oro y el Sahara Occidental en una expedicion que costo solamente 7 500 pesetas. Fue nombrado «comisario regio para el Africa occidental».
