Abstract
S’appuyant sur les discours des acteurs en présence et leur réception dans une presse française partisane, l’étude montre comment, tout en cherchant à se réapproprier la geste biblique et chrétienne et à l’associer à une entreprise technologique et commerciale, Ferdinand de Lesseps obtient l’assentiment des autorités musulmanes. Il plaide la facilité d’accès à La Mecque pour les pèlerins, s’occupe de restaurer des hauts-lieux, de faire construire des mosquées et de favoriser le culte tout en associant dignitaires musulmans et chrétiens aux bénédictions des travaux et aux fêtes de l’ouverture du canal. Cependant, cette entreprise fait naître une géographie mondialisée de l’isthme, ni conservatoire de l’histoire sainte, ni terre de mission catholique, ni nouvel espace islamique oriental pourtant revendiqué, mais zone de conflits politiques.
