Abstract
Quels ont été les critères suivis par les assemblées révolutionnaires françaises lorsqu’elles durent définir l’« ennemi » ? À lire, le corpus des lois à côté des déclarations des protagonistes, l’ennemi a plus été le représentant d’une puissance étrangère que « l’ennemi du peuple ». Les catégories de pensée ancrées dans la défense de la nation et la recherche des frontières « naturelles », déjà en vigueur avant 1789, fondent donc la politique officielle du pays, n’amalgamant pas les contre-révolutionnaires, émigrés et autres « brigands royaux » avec l’« ennemi » du pays. Cette distinction, à peu près respectée, aura permis que la Révolution soit assimilée à la nation et que les soldats de l’an II deviennent ceux de l’expansion européenne, puis ceux de la France impériale, et qu’ils ancrent la Révolution dans une tradition nationale plutôt que dans les dissensions polémiques qui furent l’autre aspect de la période.
