Abstract
Elles composent près d’un dixième du corpus d’Édouard Manet (1832-1883), ces marines où il n’eut pas d’égal, passant de l’hédonisme apparent au politique caractérisé. De ce genre alors lucratif, le peintre aura exploré et redéfini toutes les composantes sans jamais oublier les attentes du marché et les appels de l’histoire contemporaine. Le moment de leur réalisation coïncide avec l’essor des loisirs balnéaires, la modernisation des principaux ports de France et la crise de la culture postromantique. L’œuvre de Manet, ancien pilotin converti aux pinceaux, s’inscrit à la croisée des forces qui entraînent le siècle et sa peinture vers la désublimation heureuse ou grinçante d’un des grands viviers de l’imaginaire occidental.
