Abstract
La certification éthique répond aux attentes des consommateurs qui intègrent certains critères immatériels dans le choix des aliments (ex. : empreinte environnementale, équité). Cependant, telle une arme à double tranchant, elle nuira à l’objet pour lequel elle a été créée si certaines conditions ne sont pas réunies.Les programmes de certification éthique transposent dans un cadre normatif (statique) des valeurs en perpétuelle évolution ; ils doivent s’adapter aux contextes changeants.Les risques de fraude et de dérive augmentent avec la valeur ajoutée d’une marque. Pour contrer la concurrence déloyale, des contrôles appropriés sont impératifs. Il importe de trouver l’équilibre entre laxisme et hyper-réglementation, car tous deux menacent la pérennité des certifications éthiques.La certification éthique est imparfaite, mais elle a le mérite d’attirer l’attention sur les modes de production et les pratiques commerciales dans le domaine de l’alimentation. À la lumière de l’expérience québécoise, quelques réflexions permettraient d’en faire un levier de changement plus performant.
