Entre 1925 et 1998, les renards roux vivant en France sont confrontés à trois épizooties de rage dont la dernière prend des proportions inédites, faisant des dizaines de milliers de victimes au sein de la population vulpine du Nord-Est du pays. Menacés par une maladie à l’issue fatale, les renards doivent également affronter des pratiques de destruction (chasse, piégeage, empoisonnement, gazage) qui causent des millions de morts, ces méthodes brutales étant utilisées contre eux afin d’empêcher la propagation du virus rabique. Toutefois, devant l’insuccès sanitaire des tentatives d’extermination et les critiques de plusieurs groupes sociaux, la vaccination des renards s’impose et permet finalement de libérer l’espèce vulpine et le territoire national du péril rabique.
