Abstract
L’historien et théoricien politique Arthur Schlesinger Jr. fut le porte-parole le plus éminent des intellectuels libéraux à l’époque de la Guerre froide. L’évolution de sa position sur les droits civiques des Noirs et l’égalité raciale pendant les 25 années qui suivirent la Seconde Guerre mondiale eut des répercussions sur sa vision des réformes sociales. Selon lui, l’accès à l’égalité des chances reposait essentiellement sur le gouvernement plutôt que sur l’activisme populaire. S’il appuya le Mouvement afro-américain des Droits civiques des années 1960 avec enthousiasme, l’opposition au Mouvement amena Schlesinger à reconsidérer sa foi dans l’action gouvernementale.
