Abstract
Le 26 mai 1938, le Congrès américain crée le Special House Committee on Un-American Activities (SCUAA), mieux connu sous le nom de Commission Dies. De 1938 à 1944, le SCUAA a le mandat d’enquêter sur la subversion antiaméricaine d’extrême droite et d’extrême gauche. En nous appuyant sur les rapports du SCUAA, les archives personnelles de Martin Dies et certains journaux de l’époque, notamment, nous proposons d’analyser le regard de cette commission d’enquête sur les mouvements d’extrême droite américains. À cet effet, nous nous pencherons sur quatre cas en particulier, soit ceux du German-American Bund, des Black Shirts Legion italo-américaines, du Ku Klux Klan et du père Charles E. Coughlin. Le texte qui suit tend à démontrer que la perception de la commission Dies à l’égard des organisations extrémistes n’est pas uniforme, ce qui nous incite à avancer que le regard « antiaméricain » à l’endroit de la droite radicale américaine est surtout le fait de l’influence étrangère, soit celle du nazisme et du fascisme.
