Les producteurs du Sud intégrés dans le commerce équitable sont incités à adopter un mode de gouvernance démocratique dont les critères sont supposés concerner non seulement les producteurs eux-mêmes mais aussi leurs relations avec leurs différents partenaires. Dans ce contexte, la certification ne peut pas être réduite à un instrument de confiance limité à la dimension économique ou à un outil de mesure de comportement démocratique des producteurs dédié à une dimension éthique. Il apparaît au contraire qu’elle combine plusieurs dimensions, ce qui engendre pour le commerce équitable des enjeux susceptibles de dépasser très largement les implications prises en compte dans les dimensions économique et éthique considérées isolément.Sous la conformité aux critères démocratiques évalués par la certification, l’analyse comparative de deux coopératives féminines de production d’huile d’argan au Maroc met en exergue des modalités d’action très différentes, qui peuvent s’expliquer par des spécificités à la fois organisationnelles, culturelles et territoriales. Il apparaît ainsi un monde multiple, en devenir, qui, en retour, remet en question les effets non pris en compte de la certification, et conduit à proposer des scénarios sur les avenirs possibles du rôle éthique de la certification dans le commerce équitable.
