Over de Nederlandse positie in de internationale pikorde kan worden gediscussiëerd, en aangezien het land sterk afhankelijk is van de internationale context waarin het opereert, is nadenken over zijn rang voor Nederland relevant. 'Middle power' benaderingen en aanverwante begrippen uit Canadese academische kringen kunnen nieuwe inzichten bieden. Vredeskwesties zijn volgens die benaderingen een typisch aandachtsgebied voor leidinggevende middle powers. De vraag wordt dan ook gesteld in hoeverre Nederland te duiden is als middle power tijdens de Koude Oorlog, gekeken naar de uitgesproken motieven om deel te nemen aan de VN-vredesmissie UNIFIL. Deze scriptie toont aan dat het gebruik van één of meerdere overlappende middle power benaderingen houvast kan bieden in het academisch debat dat twijfelt over het internationale karakter van Nederland, dat net als Canada getypeerd kan worden als middle power.
