Abstract
Depuis la création d’un registre d’entreprises numérique en 1994, peu de réflexions ont été menées quant aux fins poursuivies par la publicité légale des entreprises au Québec. Dans cette province et ailleurs, les registres d’entreprises se trouvent pourtant au coeur de vifs débats entre organisations de la société civile, gouvernements et milieux d’affaires. L’auteure fait le point sur les finalités des registres d’entreprises en situant les controverses contemporaines dans une perspective historique. Si la numérisation de la publicité légale des entreprises a été initialement menée dans un esprit de libéralisation économique, elle a simultanément élargi le cercle des usagers potentiels de l’information publiée et doté la société civile d’un nouvel instrument de surveillance des entreprises. Bien qu’ils soient controversés, ces nouveaux usages s’avèrent conformes aux finalités historiques des registres d’entreprises : il ne convient pas de les entraver au nom de la protection de la vie privée.
