Abstract
En 1971, une politique de multiculturalisme est mise en œuvre pour promouvoir le respect de la diversité culturelle et le droit des groupes ethniques à préserver et à développer leur propre culture au sein de la société canadienne. La question du vivre ensemble au Canada est caractérisée par une diversité de cultures et une pluralité identitaire jamais subsumées en un tout homogène. Le multiculturalisme inquiète la collectivité québécoise, qui y voit une manière de saper ses velléités souverainistes, et l’islamophobie prend plus d’ampleur depuis le 11 septembre 2001. L’islamisme, en tant que mouvement regroupant les courants les plus radicaux de l’islam, engendre un sentiment de crainte au sein de la société. La communauté musulmane au Québec souffre du traitement médiatique des événements mettant en cause ce groupe minoritaire, qui propage un sentiment d’insécurité au sein de la population et nourrit les préjugés en leur endroit. L’article s’intéresse à la manière dont les quotidiens québécois ont dépeint la communauté musulmane de 2001 à 2017.
