Abstract
The maple leaf, Canada’s emblem, symbolises for many respect for human rights. This reputation stands for the most part on the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedom, which Canada enacted in 1982.1 The charter gives judicial guarantees, including the right to life, freedom and security, as well as to be presumed innocent until found guilty. Such a charter makes it possible to promote respect for differences, and a humane and sane justice system. Unfortunately, such initiatives are not enough for a perfect system of justice and to prevent wrongful convictions. Miscarriages of justice are a problem without frontiers and Canada is no exception to this rule.
