Abstract
La présente étude vise à mieux comprendre comment certains hommes utilisent le soutien social et l’isolement pour réguler leurs affects. Pour ce faire, 13 études de cas ont été réalisées avec des hommes ayant consulté un professionnel de la relation d’aide. Selon leurs témoignages, ces hommes s’isolaient et ils étaient généralement peu portés à parler de leurs problèmes et de leurs affects avant de consulter. Après un certain cheminement en consultation, les participants constatent parler davantage de leur vécu avec leur entourage. Ils estiment aussi que le fait d’en parler et de réaliser des activités sociales avec des proches a permis de mieux gérer leurs affects, soit en évacuant le trop-plein, soit en s’alimentant d’émotions positives. Le soutien social reçu a aussi contribué, selon eux, à mieux composer avec la situation-problème à l’origine du bouleversement affectif. Avant d’en parler avec leur entourage, ils estiment avoir apprivoisé leurs affects en consultation. Cet apprivoisement a été facilité, à leur avis, par un climat de sécurité affective, l’écoute, le non-jugement et les encouragements du professionnel consulté.
