Abstract
Dear readers and subscribers, physicians, and researchers, it is with great honor that I make this announcement as I assume the role of the new Editor-in-Chief of Genes, Chromosomes & Cancer. A few words about myself. I am a sarcoma pathologist working at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York. Since 2004, I have run my own research laboratory dedicated to the discovery of genetic markers that can be used as diagnostic or prognostic markers in sarcoma. Our main areas of investigation in the lab include gastrointestinal stromal tumors, vascular tumors, and fusion-positive sarcomas. Our very recent efforts have been focused on the discovery aspect of kinase-encoding gene fusions in a number of new mesenchymal entities, correlating the fusion types with morphology and clinical findings. I am immensely grateful to Felix Mitelman, who has started and built the legacy of this journal from the very beginning together with Janet Rowley. It was a tremendous honor when Felix contacted me to consider taking on this prestigious position upon his upcoming retirement. It was with excitement and a sense of duty that I happily accepted. Although this role will inquire huge responsibility and big shoes to fill for the path they have created over these three decades, I am ready for the challenge ahead and determined to keep their legacy going. Dr Mitelman kindly agreed to stay on the job for at least half a year to oversee the smooth transition and help me navigate the system without any shortcomings. I am also very grateful that the three existing Associate Editors, Drs Thoas Fioretos, Bertil Johansson, and Fredrik Mertens, all three from Lund, Sweden, agreed to stay on and run the journal together. As both the genetic and cancer field of research has evolved greatly since the origins of the Genes, Chromosomes & Cancer journal, we are expanding the horizon and scope of the journal to include the latest progress in cancer genomics, epigenetics, immune-oncology, and so on. As such we have updated the Aims and Scope of the journal to include the spectrum of new methods and new areas of interest and investigation in cancer. In this vein, we have welcomed two additional new Associate Editors with complimentary expertise, Drs Albrecht Stenzinger from Heidelberg, Germany, and Brendan Dickson, from Mt Sinai, Toronto, Canada. During this transition period, I was fortunate to interact with Wiley's Editor, Dr Tony Chen, who assisted me steering the complex process of an Editor-in-Chief responsibilities. He was instrumental in bringing some of my new ideas into fruition that might increase the impact of our journal. With Tony's help and Wiley's approval, we will implement in the near future a number of new exciting items, such as a monetary award for the best article submitted by a resident or fellow in training, a simplified submission process, expedited reviews, on-line only version of the journal, just to name a few. As I prepare the journal for a new direction, with a renewed Editorial Board and two additional Associate Editors, I am hopeful that many of you can join me in sending your best work for publication as well as serve as dedicated reviewers to enable accepting only first-rate novel research. I pledge to continue the high standards laid by my predecessors and provide rapid publication of high-quality studies in the expanding field of cancer genetics.
