How much is the reactivity of coordinated CO2 affected by the initial bonding mode? In their Communication on page 14887 ff., S. Gambarotta et al. present a d3 divalent vanadium complex that coordinates CO2 by adopting a unique end-on bridging bonding mode. This unprecedented coordination mode allows for the regular two-electron reduction of CO2 and release of CO. The result of this deoxygenation is presumably a mid-valent oxo–vanadium species.
