Cet article porte sur les recherches menées par la Société du parler français au Canada sur les origines dialectales du français québécois. Réalisées dans le but de réhabiliter certains canadianismes, pourfendus à l’époque par les puristes, ces recherches historiques ont été influencées en grande partie par les idées d’A. Rivard, son co-fondateur et principal artisan. En plus de présenter les idées qu’A. Rivard a développées à propos de la filiation entre le français québécois et les dialectes galloromans, l’article s’intéresse à la place accordée aux recherches historiques dans certaines publications, tant descriptives que normatives, de la Société.
