Il s’agit de réfléchir sur la manière dont le médiéviste peut exploiter certains textes d’hagiographie narrative comme sources de l’histoire sociale du Moyen Âge. Pour ce faire, nous reviendrons sur l’histoire des relations que les médiévistes ont entretenu avec l’hagiographie narrative au cours du XX e siècle. Ensuite, il convient de prendre en compte l’évolution méthodologique profonde qu’a connu hagiologie : si l’hagiographie reflète son époque, c’est de façon médiatisée par l’hagiographe, ce qui suppose de tenir compte de la façon dont son projet et sa culture informent l’oeuvre. Une démarche critique s’impose pour transformer le récit hagiographique en source nous renseignant sur le fonctionnement de la société dont elle est issue : nous en donnons quelques exemples à partir de la Vita Geraldi d’Odon de Cluny ( BHL 3411) et du Liber miraculorum sancte Fidis de Conques ( BHL 2943-2962).
