Cet essai réflexif se propose de comprendre le recul relatif de la dimension critique au sein de la sociologie de l’éducation au Québec. En nous basant sur trois acceptions (épistémologique, rationnelle et sociale) de la critique, nous avançons trois hypothèses. La première hypothèse souligne la complexification et la fragmentation de la base normative de la critique des politiques et pratiques d’enseignement. Elle ne s’appuie plus seulement sur un idéal de démocratisation sociale, mais, parfois de façon ambigüe ou contradictoire, sur une pluralité de référents comme la subjectivation, la reconnaissance des différences culturelles, l’égalité des genres, mais aussi l’efficacité. Il en ressort une transformation mais aussi un affaiblissement de la critique sociale. La seconde hypothèse souligne combien la base épistémologique et rationnelle de la critique est fragilisée par l’évolution du contexte institutionnel dans lequel s’élabore la sociologie de l’éducation (inscription dans les facultés professionnelles ; articulation accrue entre recherche et commande sociale). Enfin, il y a un découplage entre une critique profane et une critique savante de l’école.
