Abstract
Le passage de l’Enquête relatif au séjour d’Hélène et Ménélas en Égypte (II, 112-120) témoigne d’une attitude ambigüe de l’historien face au mythe : n’hésitant pas à critiquer Homère, il s’appuie également sur lui et tente de concilier son témoignage à celui des prêtres égyptiens. L’épopée serait donc, pour lui, un répertoire de vérités dissimulées derrière un voile de légendes. Ainsi, le Protée évoqué dans l’Odyssée aurait été en vérité un pharaon, prétendument capable de commander les eaux du Nil, ce qui aurait amené Homère à en faire une créature magique vivant dans la mer. De même, le sacrifice de deux enfants égyptiens par Ménélas n’est pas remis en question, puisque cette version ne s’oppose pas à celle du rhapsode qui ne précise pas la nature des victimes. Enfin, l’avis personnel d’Hérodote sur la guerre de Troie, qui s’éloigne du récit d’Homère, prend tout de même appui sur différents détails de l’Iliade.
