Abstract
Bovie Structure, a major north-south striking feature, extends over 175 km in the subsurface and subsurface of northeast British Columbia and southern Northwest Territories and defines the eastern limit of Liard Basin. Its structural history has been variously described as extensional, compressional, wrench and combinations thereof. The extensional 'Bovie Fault' found on surface maps is not supported by the seismic data. Examination of seismic and well data leads to a model in which Bovie Structure is the product of two intersecting compressional faults. The first, established as late as latest-pre-Cretaceous (and likely reactivated during the Cretaceous) was predominately vertical in motion, westward-directed and rooted in basement. The second, a product of Laramide thin-skinned deformation, was largely horizontal in effect, eastward-directed, with movement along a shallow detachment within the shales of the upper Banff Formation. The surface Bovie Anticline is seen as a block decapitated from the hanging wall of the earlier compressional uplift and carried eastward and upward during Laramide deformation.
