Abstract
The hydrocarbon potential of the Tertiary intermontane basins of southern British Columbia has never been seriously studied, and is currently poorly understood. Aside from minor hydrocarbon exploration in Kishenehn Basin, only limited coal exploration (mostly in the earlier part of the 20th century) has been attempted in these basins, and they must be viewed as rank frontier prospects, but situated near important markets. The fault-bounded basins are geographically small, geologically complex and their potential is currently poorly constrained. A relatively high regional geothermal gradient, abundant sandstone reservoir facies, known thick lacustrine source rock mudstones, abundant coals, the presence of shows in one basin, an extensive regional seal of Plateau Basalts and the location near populous markets are all positive factors, suggesting significant potential. Conversely, a simple lack of knowledge makes petroleum system analysis very difficult, until further data are available. This will require concerted geological and geophysical field work and several stratigraphic test wells in each basin.
