Abstract
The purpose of this report is to present a hydrocarbon resource potential assessment of Buffalo Lake area of interest. The area of interest examined here is located in the southern Great Slave Plain region and covers an area in excess of 2100 km2. The region is almost entirely covered by a thick mantle of glacial deposits; it is underlain by a gently southwest-dipping, relatively undisturbed succession dominated by Paleozoic carbonate rocks and Cretaceous clastic rocks. Six exploration wells have been drilled within, or near the outer limit of Buffalo Lake area of interest. Although suitable source and reservoir rocks are present within Buffalo Lake area of interest, the potential of significant petroleum discoveries is probably very low. Most of the prospective intervals are either shallow or exposed at surface. Other exploration risks, such as discontinuous distribution and isolation from source rocks, are also anticipated for some of the plays.
