Abstract
Cet article présente les résultats d’une étude visant à comprendre le sens de la pratique de la mendicité par des « mères de jumeaux » en contexte urbain. Elle s’appuie sur des entretiens individuels menés auprès de 30 « mères de jumeaux » en situation de mendicité dans la ville de Ouagadougou. Les résultats révèlent que la présentation des jumeaux est un fait culturel pour certains groupes socioculturels qui considèrent les jumeaux comme des enfants exceptionnels. La mendicité telle que pratiquée actuellement par des « mères de jumeaux » répond donc à des codes culturels, mais l’urbanisation lui impose une mutation pour la satisfaction des besoins existentiels. Cette nouvelle forme de mendicité reflète une des stratégies alternatives mises en oeuvre par ces femmes pour survivre et faire vivre leur famille. En subvenant aux besoins de leur famille, elles se sentent utiles et s’identifient comme des mères vaillantes et résilientes.
