L’importance de l’immigration internationale est assurément un enjeu sociopolitique central au Québec. Elle pose des défis tout aussi considérables pour les communautés francophones minoritaires réparties à travers le Canada. Dans les deux cas, des efforts sont menés afin de favoriser les candidats à l’immigration qui maîtrisent la langue française. Une question importante demeure : d’où proviendront ces francophones ? Après avoir dressé un portrait d’ensemble du vaste espace francophone mondial, à partir de tendances passées et futures, nous examinons les principaux éléments qui permettent de comprendre la phénoménale croissance du nombre de francophones liée particulièrement aux dynamiques sociodémographiques observées sur le continent africain.
