カナダでは,オンタリオ州で発生した中低レベル放射性廃棄物の処分場建設に対する原子力安全委員会の承認が間近である。国内で発生している使用済み燃料の最終処分についても21自治体からの関心表明が行われ,現在NWMO(Nuclear Waste Management Organization)によりサイト選定のための評価が進められている。本解説では,カナダにおける放射性廃棄物管理の経緯をまとめた後,使用済み燃料の処分地選定プロセスの現状を紹介する。
