In this paper, a tunable ferroelectric unit cell for wideband beam-steering reflectarray antennas is proposed. The proposed element is composed of three parts, i.e., a shorted parallel plate waveguide, a bifurcated ferroelectric phase shifter and two symmetric four-section stepped impedance transformers. Employing the DC bias voltage to vary the permittivity of ferroelectric material, the reflection phase of proposed unit cell can be continuously tuned. Full-wave simulated results show that the reflectarray element can achieve more than 360° linear phase tunability from 5.0 GHz to 6.5 GHz. The impact of ferroelectric loss on the performance of unit cell is also investigated. The proposed ferroelectric unit cell can be used to implement wideband beam-steering reflectarray antennas, providing an alternative of complicated phased array antennas.
