Abstract
Les épisodes carcéraux rythment le roman. Manon Lescaut est prisonnière à la Salpêtrière à deux reprises ; Des Grieux à son tour fut enfermé quatre fois. Les espaces d’enfermement émaillent l’espace textuel. Ils se déclinent sur plusieurs formes architecturales ; on distingue le « chariot », la « chambre haute », ainsi que de véritables prisons incluant l’Hôpital, Saint-Lazare, le Petit-Chatelet et l’étroite prison à la Nouvelle Orléans. La matérialité des lieux d’enfermement, ses composantes (« bâtiment haut à trois étages et impénétrable », « les galeries bouchées par des portes épaisses », « la barrière », la « grande porte de la rue ») forment le cadre architectural dont Manon et Des Grieux dépendent. L’architecture est dotée de fonctions dramatiques, qui conditionnent le quotidien des personnages et les péripéties des évasions facilitées par les ruses de Des Grieux. L’architecture de l’espace carcéral met en relief la ferveur de la passion et la prouesse de l’amant, et devient symbolique de l’amour-passion.
