Abstract
In 1985 the notable scholar and collector June Bedford staged an exhibition in Canada House featuring Micmac, Mohawk and Malliseet Indian souvenir art from her own personal collection, the whole of which was subsequently acquired by the National Museum of Man in Ottowa. The Whimsey was wholly an adoption from dominant white Victorian culture, such fancy objects being quite foreign to Native American usage. It is certain that Native American women were influenced by articles in Victorian ladies&s; magazines, many of which encouraged their readers to take up such genteel arts as embroidery, particularly beadwork. One might well ask why visitors to Falls would want to buy souvenirs made by Native Americans - there must have been a hundred other mementoes of this incredible sight in the visitor centres and local shops. The &s;Indian&s; as wild and untamed somehow matched the Falls, and as the Falls became a symbol of America, so the &s;Indian&s; became a symbol of the Falls.
